Hahamhane (Rabbi House)

Hahamhane was founded in 1840 with the support of the Rotshild family of Wien. It is located in the middle of a large garden surrounded with walls on a street once called Hahambaşı Street. As the name suggests, Hahamhane (Rabbi House) was used to function as the office of the Chief Rabbi of Izmir. In order to meet the needs of the Jewish community of İzmir during their festival, which was called “Passover”, the food passover was produced in an oven adjacent to the Rabbi House.

Until 1930, the central library and Yeşiva (religious school) of the Jewish community of İzmir were found here and all official operations of the community were held in the Rabbi House. In 1997, the Rabbi House was evacuated and an office was rented in Alsancak to carry out the community’s affairs. Today, the entire roof of the building has collapsed and the walls are deformed.
