Aya Vukla (Saint Vukolos) Church

It is an Orthodox Greek Church, which was built in 1886 in a neighborhood known with the same name. It is located today in the area between 1257, 1274 and 1281 streets in the neighborhood of Kapılar, Etiler. Although the other Greek churches in the city were burned by the great fire of 1922, Aya Vukla Church was not affected. Later, after the Greek community left Izmir with the exchange agreement in the wake of World War 1, it lost its function and remained empty. The building was organized as Izmir Archeology Museum in February 1927 and this situation continued until another museum building in Kültürpark was introduced in 1951. The building, which is also known as Gözlü Church, was later used as a warehouse and was allocated to İzmir State Opera and Ballet Directorate for a period of time.
