Aya Fotini Church

Before the great fire of 1922, Orthodox Greek Church Aya Fotini was located in Mahmudiye (Yaladika) region on Frenk Street. The church was first built by the sea in 1658 and collapsed with the earthquake of 1688 and rebuilt in 1690. In the following years, the church became the sanctuary of metropolitan bishop and had been the symbol of the Greeks living in İzmir. In 1856, the bell tower of the church was built, which was 33 meters high with regards to the age of the death of Jesus Christ. In 1892, a large clock was added to its bell tower. Being the highest building in the city, this tower was a source of pride for İzmir’s Greek community. It was completely destroyed by the great fire in 1922.

Recently a modern church has been built with the same name.
