Felt Works

Felt, which has an old and deep-rooted history, has survived to the present day by being transferred from the Huns to the Göktürks, from the Seljuks to the Ottomans through centuries-old traditions. Although the districts of Tire, Bergama and Ödemiş are counted among the important felt centers of İzmir, traditional “tepme” felt workshops are decreasing day by day as a result of the decrease in animal husbandry and the increase in technological products. In addition to traditional products such as saddle felt, mattress felt, and kepenek (shepherd’s felt cloak), touristic products such as shoe lining, slippers, vest, saddlebags, bags, shawls, cushions and jewelry are made in the workshops that still exist in İzmir today.

Today, a workshop combining traditional methods and modern designs continues this craft in Seferihisar district.
