Kadifekale (Velvet Castle)
Kadifekale (Velvet Castle)
It’s the region, where the city of İzmir was rebuilt around Pagos Mountain (Velvet Mountain) after the Ancient İzmir (Smyrna) had been destroyed.
In the city founded in the 4th century BC, the ruins of the Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman periods are still present. Kadifekale is located on a hill which is 186 meters high on the south of the city. According to the myth, the Amazon Women who were living in Kadifekale or in “Pagos” with its ancient name, went down from the mountainside and ruled here for many years. This castle was built by Lysmachos, one of the generals of Alexander the Great. And today there are remnants of this period. There are also cisterns belonging to Byzantine period. Only 5 towers west of the citadel and a section of its walls in the south remain. The other parts are in ruins.
