There were no official buildings in İzmir dating to earlier than 19th century. The fact that official service buildings were built in the city centers, such as the Government House, was a sign of the modernization process of the Ottoman State.
In 1868 - 1869 the original building of the current Government House was built. Until the big fire in 1970, this building remained in tact. Some parts of the Government House, which burned together with the Preparation/ Courthouse in August 1970, were not restored. The initial state of the building was quite different.
The Government House, which was burned on 31 July 1970, was destroyed a few years later. The main part of this building, which has been serving İzmir for 125 years, was rebuilt faithfully to its original. However, the surrounding buildings are demolished and in their place many of the multiple-storeyed service buildings are constructed, which are used today. In these buildings, many institutions serve, such as the Konak District Governorship, Izmir Security Directorate and the Izmir Office of Revenue.
The restoration process of the historical building, which has served for a considerable time and needs extensive repair and maintenance, was started in 2017 and it was opened for service after the completion of the restoration in 2021.
